Gillian Marie Gratton Death: With broken hearts and tearful eyes, we gather to remember and honour the life of Gillian Marie Gratton, who tragically passed away in a fatal accident on April 11, 2025, at the young age of 39. Her sudden departure has left an unfillable void in the lives of her family, friends, and the communities she nurtured so deeply—from veterinary science to the dog and horse world, and the loyal customers she served through her beloved pet store.
Born on November 26, 1985, in Calgary, Alberta, Gillian was the cherished second child of Ron and Simone Gratton, and a proud little sister to Curtis. From an early age, Gillian showed a unique blend of warmth, curiosity, and passion that would go on to define her life. Her journey in education and science was shaped early on through her studies in Calgary, where she graduated from Bishop Carroll High School in 2003, then pursued post-secondary education at Mount Royal University and the University of Calgary. However, it was in Saskatoon, when she transferred to the University of Saskatchewan in 2007 with her loyal Portuguese Water Dog “Gambit” by her side, that Gillian truly found her home.
She earned her BSc in 2009 and completed her Master’s in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences in 2012. Her brilliance and love for animals were evident in every step she took, and she found her calling in academic life—working as a Lab Technician in Animal Studies at the University of Saskatchewan. For ten years, she mentored students, managed lab operations, and poured her heart into every project. Her calm demeanor, intellect, and fierce dedication left an indelible mark on those she worked with.
In 2011, Kevin Freistadt came into Gillian’s life, and together they built a love story rooted in respect, shared passions, and rural serenity. Married in April 2015, they made their home on a beautiful 80-acre property outside Saskatoon, where Gillian created her sanctuary—an oasis filled with perennial gardens, vegetable beds, a koi pond, and of course, the constant joyful presence of her dogs. She found deep peace in the changing seasons, in long walks through the aspen woods, and in the quiet strength of life on the land.
Her connection to animals went far beyond profession—it was the beating heart of who she was. In Saskatoon’s dog community, Gillian was a pillar, known for her integrity, expertise, and advocacy. She passionately showed and bred Portuguese Water Dogs under the Armada kennel name, beginning with Gambit, followed by Rogue and Marrow. She handled her dogs herself, building not only a name but a legacy in CKC Conformation and various dog sports. Her involvement with New Hope Dog Rescue underscored her compassion and belief that every dog deserved love and a home.
But her love didn’t stop at dogs. Gillian was also a gifted equestrian. Having ridden horses in the Hunter Jumper community as a child with her beloved “Cutie,” she returned to this joy with “Chevy” in 2017, rekindling a lifelong passion that brought her new friendships and fulfillment. Whether riding through open fields or cheering on others at local shows, she gave her whole heart to her animal companions.
In 2021, she realized yet another dream—the opening of Pet Planet Primrose in Saskatoon. For years she had worked at Pet Planet, even while pursuing her degrees and university work. Her store was more than a business; it was a community hub, a place where she shared her knowledge and warmth with every customer, whether two- or four-legged. Pet Planet Primrose was her pride, and it will remain a part of her lasting impact in Saskatoon.
Gillian was so much to so many—a devoted wife, daughter, sister, aunt, granddaughter, friend, and mentor. She is survived by her beloved husband, Kevin; her parents, Ron and Simone; brother Curtis (Kristin) and their children Sophia, William, and Jack; grandfather Edward Gratton; father-in-law Clayton Freistadt; brother-in-law Bob Freistadt (son Dirk); and close Saskatoon family Wendi Stoeber and Edmond Lemire. Her extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends also mourn her immeasurable loss.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at Saskatoon Funeral Home. A livestream will be available approximately five minutes before the event.
In honour of Gillian’s legacy of compassion and care, donations may be made to New Hope Dog Rescue or STARS Air Ambulance.
Gillian Gratton’s spirit—gentle, passionate, determined, and loving—will live on in the lives she touched, the animals she cared for, and the community she helped build. Though gone too soon, she leaves behind a legacy of light that will never dim.
Rest peacefully, Gillian. You were—and will always be—deeply loved.
